Salina’s Ohio Street entryway brought together a design team of engineers and architects, bridge builders, landscape designers, and artist Vicki Scuri. Together the team worked with the City and Union Pacific Railroad to create a much-desired vehicle and pedestrian overpass. The organizing principle in this gateway design is Salina’s railroad history. Design elements in the required fencing, pedestrian path, bridge structure, lighting, and landscaping all relate to railroads and the cadence of trains, providing a rhythmic progression of experiences as one enters or departs Salina. Names of local trains that operated on the tracks below are integrated into the protective barrier wall.
