The Smoky Hill Museum

photo_museum.jpg - 21532 Bytest.gif - 279 Byteshe "Keeper of the Past," the Smoky Hill Museum is charged with the responsibility of creating a "dynamic, inviting, educational Museum that collects, preserves, researches, exhibits and interprets the history and artifacts of Saline County and the region." Whether by teaching pioneer life skills to area 4th graders, or preserving an old wedding dress, the Museum strives to create a bridge from the past to the present, thereby connecting people and place.

With the addition of five new staff members and the development of a new exhibit gallery plan, the Museum is literally in a state of change. Striving for exhibits that focus on local topics and educational programs that connect with every visitor, the Smoky Hill Museum plans to be in the middle of an ongoing community dialogue to preserve the past, enlighten the present, and prepare for the future.

Highlights of 1999 include educational programs on bicycling in the 19th century and a Noon Coolers lecture series about growing up in Kansas. The Museum presented several new exhibits, including Let's Play: Pastimes from the Past and Pineapple Quilts: New Quilts from an Old Favorite.
